Fly Tying Instructional Video: How to Tie The Bay Street Bunny

People often ask, “what is the best fly to catch redfish on?”. Well, to be completely honest, there’s not one simple answer. Water clarity, temperature, time of year, and water depth all play major factors into what a redfish will eat on any given day. Redfish eat crabs, shrimp, and baitfish so knowing exactly what is going to be in a given area can be pretty tough. So when in doubt, I like to tie on something that looks like all three types of bait at once. It’s called The Bay Street Bunny.

The Bay Street Bunny is an original fly pattern designed by Capt. Jack Brown here in Beaufort and has been an effective pattern for over 20 years now. It’s a simple pattern really, a zonker strip tied behind some flashy chenille with bead chain eyes and you’re done. But I think the simplicity of it is what makes it such a deadly pattern. A lot of the times, less is more.

Size, color, and weight of the fly all vary depending on the time of year. In the video below I am tying a black and olive color, which I would use almost all year round. Typically, the darker the fly the dirtier the water you’re fishing in. Black/purple, olive, black, and rust colors work well from the spring through the fall and then I usually switch over to light colors like tans, browns, pinks and whites.

With that being said, hope you enjoyed the video and stay tuned for more tying videos to come! If you’d like to purchase any of the tying kits for the Bay Street Bunny just follow this link here or get in touch with Bay Street Outfitters via phone or email and they can take care of you.
